Gov. Mark Sanford signed a bill into law Monday that takes the Department of Motor Vehicles out of the Department of Public Safety, and establishes it as its own department.

The law also makes a driver's licence valid for ten years instead of five.

Officials estimate that move will decrease traffic to DMV offices by 250,000 people.

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles began implementing changes Monday that they hope will make things easier for drivers

Officials say that greeters have begun working in half of the state's 84 DMV offices.

Their job is to help customers obtain the proper paperwork, administer their vision tests, and answer their questions.

Other changes include removing all telephones from behind the counters so workers can concentrate on helping customers in the office, and adding weekend hours at six DMV offices, including one in Greenville County.

The Saluda Dam Road office will be open on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., beginning June 7.

Beginning June 8, driver will be able to renew their driver's license, pay fees, or change their address online at the DMV website
