LAURENS, S.C. -- Laurens County residents are counting up the costs after a pair of tornadoes struck the county Thursday night, but officials said they had no reports of serious injuries or deaths.WYFF News 4's John Cessarich said that two tornadoes crossed the county between 7 and 8 p.m. before moving northeast toward Union and Cherokee counties. One of the main areas hit was around Laurens High School. The school itself suffered little damage, but fences and a guard shack on the school grounds were damaged.
Several hundred people watching a wrestling match at the high school took shelter minutes before a tornado hit nearby. The same tornado smashed several mobile homes near the high school, including one across the street from Rick Doolittle, who went to help the three people inside. They was covered in debris and insulation when we found them," he said. All three survived by hiding in the bathroom.""We just ducked behind the door and it seemed like forever, but it was only a second or two but it was ...", David Rowell said. He and his roommate weren't hurt when a tornado tore their home apart."We was both just sitting in the floor, covering our heads and saying our [prayers]," he said. One home was lifted from its foundation and smashed into nearby downed trees.Laurens County officials estimated between 5 and 10 homes suffered significant damage from the storm, though an assessment will continue through the day.A large blaze at the TNT Logistics facility reportedly began when winds lifted parts of the roof and dropped it back onto the building, damaging the electrical system and starting a fire.Laurens County Sheriff's Capt. Chris Hudson said about a quarter of the 1 million-square foot building was involved in the fire.Between 75 and 100 people living on Metric Road and League Road within a half-mile radius of the distribution center were told to leave their homes due to the danger from burning tires and other hazardous material in the building. A shelter was opened for displaced residents at the YMCA on Anderson Street. One minor injury was reported as workers evacuated the plant. The fire was brought under control early Friday morning, though it still continues to smolder.Workers at the facility are asked to call 682-7800, ext. 50 at least one hour before their shift is supposed to begin.Evacuees were allowed to return home early Friday morning. The National Weather Service is conducting its own damage survey to confirm the tornadoes' paths and strengths.Watch WYFF News 4 for much more on this story at 5 and 6 p.m.UPDATED:See Photos From The Tornadoes' Aftermath In Laurens County
